Press release 27.04.2012
The 8th of March is a day to celebrate women. In 2012 the UN International Women’s Day theme was ‘Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty’ so SCAD made empowerment their aim. The day was celebrated in three villages with thousands of women creating a lasting impression by marching 6km through the streets shouting slogans of equality.
SCAD recognise women as being capable of leadership and train them to be self supporting and independent. As a result the standard of living for the whole family improves. The empowerment of women ultimately leads to social, economical and political change.
How do we treat women? Do we respect and motivate them? Women are often tormented by insults and limited to a marginal existence. This may not be prevalent in cities but is widespread in villages in India. It is these women that SCAD makes every effort to reach out to. Watch a video here about how SCAD work with women.
The Women’s Day celebration affirmed women empowerment, women’s important place in village development and solidarity for women’s rights.
Kate Hartley, a local volunteer says.
“It was an amazing feeling to march among hundreds of women who boldly came forward for their voices to be heard on women’s empowerment issues.”
Chinnakarppagam, is 18 years old and she is from Vilathikulam. She has Cerbral Palsy and mental disabilities. Because of serious difficulties with coordination she never learnt to walk properly and has always crawled.
ChinnaKarppagam has been receiving CBR treatment and support from SCAD since 2009. SCAD arranged a Government ID card and monthly Stipend for her. She has been given progressive daily exercises to strengthen her legs and improve coordination and balance.
Field workers encouraged Chinnakarppagam to walk every day with the help of a support in the home and motivated her to help her mother with cleaning and general housework.
She has now learnt to support her mother in the home. After regular strengthening exercises and regular treatment she has been able to walk inside and outside since December 2011. Her mother is extremely happy.
To help us to help another child like Chinnakarppagam please donate. Click here to watch a video about how SCAD work with people with disabilities.

Tamil Nadu charity Social Change and Development (SCAD) is strengthening its links with overseas supporters this year with the launch of three new initiatives as part of its plans for 2012. It now means it will be easier for you to learn more, see more and do more with SCAD than you’ve ever been able to do before.
Whether your want to travel to Tamil Nadu to work with SCAD, volunteer with SCAD, or simply learn more about its work wherever you are, the door is wide open. SCAD’s work is about community empowerment. It works with half a million people in 500 of the poorest villages in the south of the state.
Through SCAD’s intervention, communities are given the tools to participate in their own development and future in order to build better lives for everyone in the villages.
SCAD’s newly re-launched website www.scad.org.in has blogs and updates and features a series of films profiling its impact and breadth of work with remote rural communities in the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in the very south of the state.
Supporters can not only watch and read more information about the impact of the charity’s work but they can also donate directly online for the first time.
