The Award is open to all young women currently attending any of the further education colleges founded by SCAD, Social Change and Development.

It offers prestigious prizes on a given topic in 3 separate categories for you to choose from:

WHAT IS THE AWARD?

The Maxine Award has been sponsored by Dr Eleanor O’Sullivan, a leading Radiologist, a former Council Member of the British Medical Association in London, England and herself a recipient of the coveted “UK Gold Medal for Services to Medicine”. She qualified as a Doctor in London at a time when only 10% of medical students were girls. This number has now risen to over 50%. Indeed, young women are progressing and excelling in all fields and these prizes are intended to recognise and encourage this. Dr Eleanor has been a Medical Director of her hospital for 8 years, was formerly a Major in the British Army, has designed and built 5 houses and most recently, a Museum, and organised a Charlie Chaplin Film Festival!

The Award itself is named after the noted Artist Maxine Relton, who has been bringing sketching groups to Tamil Nadu from Europe since 2009 to support the important work that SCAD carries out in the rural communities of Tamil Nadu, South India. Maxine herself is inspirational and an outstanding example of how much a woman can achieve artistically and in business. She is passionate about helping people to achieve their full creative potential in life. She herself originally trained as a linguist, learning French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian, then worked as a simultaneous interpreter for an international company before achieving a First-Class BA Honours Degree in Fine Art in London, followed by an MA in Fine Art at London’s renowned Slade School of Art.

The annual prizes are offered exclusively to SCAD’s female students, whatever their field of study. They will be awarded to the winners of the competition on given themes. These topics are designed to encourage broad-based endeavour and excellence in art, science and business enterprise. The winners or winning teams (up to 4 members) will:

• Be invited to the Public Award Ceremony to receive their Certificate of Outstanding Merit
• Receive a cash prize
• Be celebrated in the International Profile on SCAD’s official website
• Have their names inscribed on a special plaque: The Maxine Award Board of Winners, displayed at SCAD’s main site

WHO CAN ENTER FOR THE AWARD?

The Award is open to all female students currently attending any of SCAD’s further education colleges, whatever your chosen discipline. There is no participation fee. You may compete individually or in small groups of up to 4 students. Each competitor, whether single or in a group, may submit ONLY ONE entry and may enter

ONLY ONE of the 3 different categories.

WHAT ARE THE 2019 AWARD THEMES?

We have given below detailed guidance to help you choose which of these 3 different categories most appeals to you. An initial shortlist will be made from all submissions, followed by a further selection of the first and second prize-winners for the most outstanding entries in each category. The Judges will be looking above all for:

• An imaginative, creative approach to your theme
• New material devised expressly in response to the competition
• A lively, enthusiastic presentation of 7 minutes’ maximum duration
• A commercial or socially beneficial angle demonstrating a spirit of enterprise
• Evidence of thorough and thoughtful research

We hope the contest will stimulate you and be inspiring but also that it will be fun. Remember you can compete individually or form a team of up to 4 to enter your chosen category.

The subjects chosen for each category this year are as follows:

1. ART – GRANDMA’S TALES

Are you visually creative and expressive by nature? Do you long to share your ideas? We invite you to turn your dreams into reality by reproducing some family stories into a beautiful little illustrated pack for young children.

THE TASK IS

• To choose 5 or 6 entertaining family stories.
• To assemble the stories into a small handmade pack for young children, writing them out in Tamil on one side with an English translation on the opposite page, using simple easy language suitable for small children to enjoy and learn.
• Enliven your stories with fun, descriptive pictures in the form of drawings, photos or paintings.
• Find a good way to hold the pages together, eg with staples or ribbons.
• To consider a possible digital reproduction of your little pack for use in SCAD and other local schools. How much would this cost for a given quantity?
• You will have 7 minutes to show your creative ideas to the Award Judges.

SCAD STORYTELLERS INSPIRE THE YOUNG!

2. SCIENCE – Health and Wellbeing

This year’s Science Award combines theatre, film and medicine. We invite you to create a short, imaginative drama in Tamil or English showing how your heroine comes to the rescue, perhaps even saves a life, thanks to her knowledge of basic First Aid.

For your Award entry, make a video of your performance to present to the Judges. The aim of your video is to inspire others to gain first-aid knowledge in order to help family, friends and community when needed.

THE TASK IS:

• To research 5 ways of providing basic first-aid assistance in the event of a medical emergency.
• To create a powerful short drama showing how someone with first-aid training dealt calmly with the whole situation and helped make a crucial difference before professional medical help arrives or perhaps proves necessary.
• Make a video of your play in Tamil or English (maximum 7 minutes) for the Award Judges, [together with a summary in English, if your video is in Tamil]. For instance, a storyteller could relate what happened, how the rescue was effected, what First Aid was used and, at the end, how she herself felt inspired to do a basic life-savers’ course herself to enable her to help others if necessary. Your film should finish with information about how and where to learn these simple but vital life-skills and mention a few typical situations in which they might be needed.

Taking first-aid training will also give you confidence in a wide range of non-medical day-to-day situations. For further ideas and helpful web links, consult the Award Co-ordinator.

SCAD STUDENTS PREPARE FOR LIFE!

3. BUSINESS ENTERPRISE: PROMOTING LOCAL HANDICRAFTS

Are you a natural entrepreneur? Do you enjoy strategic new thinking? Would you like to use your talents to help local makers of handicrafts develop more successful business models?

THE TASK IS

• To identify some producers of special local handicrafts
• To choose 1 or 2 who interest you and find out about the issues they face. What are their hopes, their problems, how can you help them develop their business? For example, can you suggest how they can improve their supply sources, use their existing skills to develop new products, extend their clientele? Could you help them design a website for online marketing, produce some promotional leaflets or brochures? Could you find new funding for them through tourism organisations or regional government promotion?
• To present your research findings and show how you have begun to produce practical and imaginative support for your chosen group of handicraft workers.
