Education is a fundamental human right which every child is entitled to. Education is critical to human development and society; it helps pave the way to the successful and productive future for a nation. When we can ensure that children have access to a rights-based, quality education that is rooted in gender equality we create a ripple effect of opportunity that impacts generations to come. Inequalities condemn millions of children, particularly girls, to a life without quality education and therefore to a life of missed opportunities.
Education for rural people is crucial in achieving ‘Education for All’ – ensuring universal primary education by 2015 (UN millennium development goal). The 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, also emphasised the role of education. SCAD’s work to achieve sustainable development is also stressing that providing quality education to all is vital. SCAD also provide additional activities including providing supplementary education, conducting sports fairs, forming students club and conducting kutti doctors’ training.
During 2011, 2 schools were repaired, one in Melathattaparai of Pudhukottai block and the other in Pasuvanthanai of Ottapidaram Block. The repair work undertaken was to prevent rain water from leaking into the class rooms. Roof and floor repair work was also done and this has increased the safety of the school. One school toilet was repaired in Pudhukottai block ensuring the girl children especially attend school more regularly.
