It always has been SCAD’s wish to develop students in an exceptional way. The staff of Anbu Illam (school for differently-abled children) took an initiative to give special coaching to the students in such a way that they could try for the Tamil Nadu Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) State Board examinations for the academic year 2011-2012. As a result, nine disabled children were given special care and training by the SCAD staff to appear for the Board examination.
The Directorate of Government Examinations Chennai officially announced the SSLC examination timetable on 3 January 2012. Since then the teachers took extra efforts to train the students even after school hours. The exams began on 4 April 2012 and went on till 23 April with study leave in between. This year, more than 12 lakh students appeared for the examination.
The results were released in June 2012. Of the nine Anbu Illam students who had registered and appeared for the board exam, two students, Subbiah and Mari Selvam, have passed, securing 293 marks out of 400 and 285 marks out of 400, respectively. Like all other special children, these two students were also exempted from writing the English exam. On having secured 73% and 71%, the joy of the two boys, their parents and the staff knew no bounds. In fact, these two students have in turn become a source of motivation to the staff.
They will be enrolled in the SCAD Community college for further studies. The remaining seven students will soon be reappearing for the examination.
